Why doesn't Daddy live here anymore?

A little while ago, Daddy and Mommy found out that they had made a big mistake when they got married. They thought they loved each other very much, but after a few years of living together, they found out they were wrong. Well, this caused a big problem, because by then, you had been born. They both love you very much, and neither of them wanted to live anywhere without you. But they were afraid that if they kept on living together after they knew they didn't love each other, they would start fighting with each other and become enemies and learn to hate each other. So they had a big, long discussion about who was going to get to live with you. You are such a good kid that both Daddy and Mommy wanted to live with you.

But the problem was that Daddy and Mommy didn't want to live with each other. They just couldn't make up their minds who would get to live with you. Finally they went to a judge, because the judge has the job of making very hard decisions when other people don't know what to do. When Mommy and Daddy asked the judge to decide who you would live with, the judge looked up the rules in a big book of laws. The rules said that when both parents agree that they don't want to live together and they both want to live with their children, sometimes the mother gets to do it and the father has to find another house somewhere else. Other times, though, the father gets to live with the children and the mother has to find another house somewhere.

In our case, the judge said Mommy gets to live with you. But the judge also said that Daddy can see you every weekend if he wants to, and you can call him on the telephone if you want to, and you can write to each other when you get big enough to write.
