Why can't I say 'stupid'?

Words are very powerful things! The Bible says God created the whole world by saying words. Because we are made in the image of God, our words are very powerful too, even if they aren't nearly as powerful as God's words. It's very important to remember how powerful our words are, because if we forget, we're liable to waste our power by saying things that are abusive or hurtful. And every bit of power we waste is gone forever, just like every bit of time we waste. We can't ever get it back, no matter how sorry we are that we wasted it. Sorry never gives us back anything we lost.

Words can be used to make people feel very good. But words can also be used to make people feel very bad. Words can be used to make promises, or they can be used to break promises. They can be used to tell lies or to tell the truth. They can hurt or help. There's only one real problem with words: they can't be unsaid.

Every time we tell a lie, or hurt somebody's feelings, or break a promise, or any of those things, we are wasting those words. They don't do anybody any good at all. And when we waste words, we waste our power, just because words are such powerful things. And when we waste our power, it gets weaker and weaker and weaker. If we keep on wasting it, pretty soon we won't have any left, and then what will we do?

After we have lost our power, we can't believe in ourselves any more. We can't believe anything we say, so we don't think anyone else will believe us - and we won't even be able to believe anything anyone else says. That's why people who used up all their power think they are helpless and are so depressed. They don't even believe in themselves any more.

And we have other powers. Our thoughts are very powerful, for example.

Scientific studies have proven that if teachers think a kid is stupid, they start acting as if the kid is stupid, and pretty soon, the kid starts to think he is stupid, and then he gets to be stupid - if no one ever tells him his teacher was wrong.

Some people learn very fast and other people learn very slowly, but nobody is ever stupid until he thinks he is. If you think you're stupid - you're right. And if you think you're smart, you're still right. That's how powerful your thoughts are.

That's why we have to be very careful about the things we let into our heads. Everything that gets into our heads is a source of thoughts. Some things are the source of strengthening thoughts, but lots more things are the source of weakening thoughts. That's why we don't have a television. Many television shows and commercials imply that what we are depends entirely on what we have.

Other shows and commercials imply that what we are depends on sex or money or political influence and stuff like that. And the sad thing is that if we see enough of it, we start to think it's true. And just as soon as we let ourselves think it's true, it is true, because all those things start to be more important than obeying the Only Rule. Such thoughts are weakening thoughts, and we don't need them around here.

We could lose so much of our personal power that we don't believe in ourselves at all any more, but only in the advertisers and their products.

Everything we let into our heads has an impact on our thoughts. Our thoughts change the way we act, the way we treat ourselves and the way we react to other people.

But it isn't only our words and thoughts that are so powerful. Our wants are pretty powerful, too.

You can be whatever you want to be when you grow up, if you want it hard enough. That's because when people really want something, they learn everything they can about it, and they practice really hard to learn to do it right.

Now you do have to be careful what you want, because sometimes wanting something is a lot better than having it. Lots of people want to have or to do instead of wanting to be. So they spend their money on something they think they want. But then they have to take care of it, and keep it picked up and put away and clean. And after awhile, they get bored with it or it wears out or gets broken so it can't be fixed, and then what? Then they don't have the thing and they don't have the money to do anything else or go anywhere else or buy something else that might be important. And no matter how sorry they are that they wasted their money, sorry never gives them back anything they wasted.

Other folks want to control people, so they get to be bullies and bad guys. But I'll tell you a little secret lots of grown-ups don't know: Anybody who wants to control other people only wants to do that because he can't control himself. It's always easier to get other people to do hard things than it is to do hard things ourselves! I think maybe people who do this must be really clogged up inside, because they don't let very much of God's love leak out of them.

So be very careful what you say, what you think, and what you want. And be very careful what you let into your minds, because what comes into your heads will be the "stuff" your thoughts and wants and words are all about.

Think very hard before you waste any of your words or thoughts or wants, because you will weaken your power a little bit every time you waste it. Remember, all your words and thoughts and wants have to obey the Only Rule. Remember what the Rule is? "I won't hurt myself." And wasting our power hurts us a lot more more than we think it does.
