Why did Grandma have to die?

Because she has done the job God wanted her to do.

When you finish your day at school, you get to come home to your family. When Mommy and Daddy finish their work at their jobs every day, they get to come home to you. You get home from school a long time before they get home from work, don't you?

Well, when people die, what they are really doing is going to their real home. We have to leave God when we're born, and when we finish our jobs on earth, we die and get to go home to Him. We don't ever have to leave Him again.

Now, Mommy and Daddy love you very, very much, and we wouldn't leave you every day to go to work if we didn't have to, even though we also love our jobs and wouldn't want to work for any other companies.

In the same way, Grandma loves God very, very much, and she wouldn't want to leave Him and come back to earth if she didn't have to, even though she also loves you and wouldn't want to be part of any other family.

Grandma went to God a long time before you will, but she'll be waiting there for you just like you wait for Mommy and Daddy every day. It hurts us all that she died, because we miss her so much. And she probably misses us a lot, too, just like Mommy and Daddy miss you when we go to work.

When you think about Grandma, instead of thinking about how much you miss her try to think about all the good times you had with her. That way you will always remember them, and when you see her again in heaven, you can talk to her about them. Don't you think she'd like that?

But remember: Just as you don't get to choose when school is over so you can come home, and Mommy and Daddy don't get to choose when the workday is over and we get to come home, so nobody gets to choose when their job is over and they get to go to God. Only God can decide that.
